Studio Hard Set
BBC Sport IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015
After the success of scoreboards created in previous years, Hive were asked to also design a studio hard set for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing 2015 for BBC Sport.
We based the design for the events medal scoreboard on Yaner, The Swallow. Yaner is the mascot for the Beijing Championship games. We illustrated him at a super large size holding each of the medals under his wing.
The board was constructed with a gong in the centre of Yaner’s belly as an interactive element to the hard set. The gong was “gonged” on the IAAF Highlights show to celebrate whenever a British Athlete had won a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal.
The board was built with MDF to support the weight of the gong and was also painted to suit the design. Wheels were also added to enable easy manoeuvrability around set.
The medal boards to the side of Yaner were magnetic. This was so that the athletes’ faces could be stuck on the scoreboard to indicate the medal won. This kept a running total of the medal success at the games. The scoreboard added a really fun feature to the highlights show!
In addition to this we created a second magnetic scoreboard for one of the presenters, Michael Johnson. Michael used this in his commentary about key athletes in the games. The second magnetic board featured a board design of a gong named ‘Michael’s Golden Gong’.
