Start Creative are a not for profit organisation which supports the work of the charity Start in Salford. All of their products are all hand crafted by highly trained individuals. All crafters certainly benefit in some way from the creative process that goes into making their products. Every penny of profit from the sale of these chopping boards go back into the charity. The profits help Start to offer more people the chance to grow and shine, as well as giving them a chance to learn new skills.

Hive were asked to help with the creation of the packaging for the chopping boards. We worked with Start to create the packaging design which needed to adhere to John Lewis’s guidelines. The photography of the product was taken in the workshop at Start. We featured a range of different stories of individuals who make some of the boards on the back of the cardboard sleeve, for a personal approach.

I became a Start Creative Volunteer when I retired. It is a great set up that lets me use the skills I have learned over the years to help fund a wonderful charity by making beautiful wooden products.

I have been going to Start in Salford for some years. Start has helped me a lot with my problems and woodwork has been a big part in my progress. And now I am one of the Start Creative team making chopping boards for John Lewis, it’s really good to work with natural products, and not man made materials.

I have always loved wood and its properties. I consider myself lucky to now work with wood and be part of making such a beautiful product, I have been at Start for a number of years and being part of the community here has had a positive effect on my health and continues to keep me well.

Start are certainly proud to now have the chopping boards they make listed in John Lewis. The chopping boards have been hugely popular. Below pictured is the Mayor of Salford being presented one, the lucky man.
As a result, the listing of the chopping boards in John Lewis has created a huge buzz for Start in the press and even featured on local radio stations too!
